According to Nielsen, off-premise canned wine sales in 2019 grew 79.2 percent. That is enormous in comparison to the mere 1.4 percent increase over the previous year. The number of winemakers canning wine subsequently grew 180 percent (from 125 to 350) between June 2018 and June 2019, according to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based wine-in-a-can research firm, WIC Research. It’s evident that the industry is booming, but is it here to stay? One WIC Researcher, Dr. Robert L. Williams, Jr., compared the evolution of canned wine’s perception to that of the screw cap — difficult to initially accept but eventually the innovative convenience laid its way to all retail shelves.
